Many of our existing subscribers have praised our data for accuracy (see feedback). The data is checked by volunteer indexers. These are family historians who have local knowledge of the areas and local names they are checking. Census transcripts provide information contained in the original census pages as clear, typed text, searchable by forename, surname, age, occupation, relationship to head of household, birth-place. No Broadband? No problem — Transcripts give you the answers fast, as clear, typed text. Linked images can be printed or saved to form part of your family history. |

Find more information and results, more easily, with our range of search tools: Unique Search Tool: SmartSeach

|

Other Search Tools:We have powerful search tools to help you find your ancestors in the census: Name Variants Use this option to search for different spellings of a name. For example, Bailey and Bayley. This technique uses the phonetic sound of the word to find similar sounding matches. Nicknames Use this option to search for nicknames which may have been used instead of the standard name - for example Betty, Betsy, Beth or Liz for Elizabeth. Indexes which have these features will show a checkbox alongside the appropriate name entry fields so you can include them if you wish. Family Forename Search Look for groups of forenames within families, often surname spelling changed over time and also enumeration or ambigous handwriting could mean that forenames of three or more family members will find them. House and Street Search Find the house your ancestors lived in or find out who lived in your house. |

Census indexes take the hard work out of trawling through thousands of pages of handwritten census material. By entering the name for which you are looking you can find references for the appropriate pages in the census. We have indexes for the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901 censuses, covering counties across England and Wales and we are continually adding more data and counties. Many of our existing subscribers have praised the indexes for their accuracy (see feedback). The volunteer indexers are family historians who have local knowledge of the areas they are indexing and local names. More information about census indexes here. |

Non-conformist Records cover Methodists, Wesleyans, Baptists, Independents, Protestant Dissenters, Congregationalist, Presbyterians, Unitarians and Quakers (Society of Friends). More will be coming soon. This data proves invaluable for research prior to census and BMD records. The details give images of early birth certificates and registers which include baptisms, marriages and burials. These Records and images are unique to S&N and can only be found on this site and on our official BMDregisters site.

Trade Directories have been produced for well over 300 years and can prove to be an invaluable source of information about local communities. As well as information about individuals, they also provide a wealth of general background information. For the periods before the census was available, they provide a snapshot of communities and their principal inhabitants, and the later ones are extremely useful tools for locating ancestors in the census. |

This 19th century tax survey provides an index to all individuals who owned 1 acre or more of land in 1873. It is arranged alphabetically by County where the land is situated, so their may be holdings in more than one county. It provides the Name of the owner: their address (town or village only); how much land they owned in the County and its gross estimated rental value. |

A New Feature for the genealogist has recently been added: a Wills and Testaments Index Viewer. Bristol, Edinburgh and a variety of Yorkshire volumes have been added, with more to follow soon. Wills are a valuable source of genealogical information. They can give details of family members, places of residence and burial, as well as revealing details about their possessions. |

If your ancestors were knighted you can trace them back to 1127. |
